Applied AI Engineer, Prototyping

The Role

As an Applied AI Engineer on the Proto team, you will lead the design and delivery of robust, production-grade AI systems in rapid development cycles. The Proto team sits at the intersection of product and customer, turning advanced technology into meaningful, real-world solutions. You will be deeply involved in both client-facing and internal projects, ensuring Mistral’s capabilities directly address business needs and drive measurable value.

You will translate complex, often ambiguous business requirements into engineered solutions that work at scale. In this role, you guide technical decisions, collaborate closely with internal teams and customers, and help shape product direction by pressure-testing what’s possible. Your work will unlock new business opportunities and help drive continuous product improvement.

What You Will Do

• Deliver end-to-end full-stack AI solutions from project scoping through deployment

• Partner with customers to clarify needs, define requirements, and architect robust systems

• Ship ready-to-use applications for both clients and Mistral’s internal teams

• Lead architecture and technical choices, ensuring solutions are scalable and reliable

• Diagnose and solve complex technical problems across various industries and use cases

• Contribute to internal tools, product improvements, and open-source initiatives

• Evaluate and integrate new technology capabilities into existing systems

• At least 2 years building and deploying production AI products or systems

• Experience working with modern AI/ML stacks, including LLMs, RAG, and agentic systems

• Strong Python skills, with experience in scalable backend frameworks like FastAPI

• Familiarity with frontend development, ideally using frameworks such as React or Vue

• Ability to quickly understand business needs and translate them into technical plans

• Skilled at explaining complex technical ideas to diverse stakeholders

• Track record of collaborating effectively across different teams

• Interest in shipping polished solutions and improving existing platforms
